Obituary for Michael W. Monaco

Michael (Mike) W. Monaco, 76, of Aspers, PA, formerly of Beltsville, MD, passed away on Friday, September22, 2017 at his home in the presence of family and loving cats. Mike was born October 15, 1940 in Washington, DC, the son of the late Daniel and Louella (Myers) Monaco. He grew up in Bethesda, MD and graduated from Walter Johnson High School in 1959. He earned an Associate's Degree from Montgomery Junior College in 1965, and proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army that fall. Mike was a Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne, while earning a diploma from the Control Data Institute in Programming Technology in Frankfurt, Germany. He was stationed in Da Nang, serving in the 1st Signal Brigade during the Vietnam War and survived the 1968 Tet Offensive. Mike was honorably discharged from the military in 1968. He met and married Shirley (Pace) Donaldson, and together they had two daughters, Tracy and Christine, whom they raised in Beltsville, MD. Mike earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland in 1975 and was a life-long Terrapins fan. Working in both the private and public sectors, Mike's career spanned the early days of computer programming. He worked several years at the U.S. Government Printing Office and 17 years at the U.S. Department of Energy as a Computer Systems Analyst for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He retired in 1995 from the federal government after 25 years of distinguished service. In 2007, he moved to Aspers, Pennsylvania (near Gettysburg) where he enjoyed a slower pace of life, civil war history, and the countryside. He Rocked the Red and Feared the Turtle, was a devoted and often disappointed Skins fan, and he loved having baseball back in DC. He never met a pair of glasses or a coffee mug he didn't lose, or an animal that he wouldn't give a home to. Mike formed lifelong friendships in his early, formative years, and was a good friend to all who knew him; but he was an even better, more devoted son, brother, father, and grandpa. He was overly generous, highly opinionated, lovable, and funny. Mike was a survivor of car wrecks in the 50s, military combat in the 60s, his teenage daughters in the 80s, and a crippling motorcycle accident in the 90s. In 2012, he received a diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and in true Mike fashion, he remained optimistic, fought hard and fierce, but eventually succumbed after a five-year battle. He is survived by his daughters, Tracy Lynn Monaco of Sarasota, FL, and Christine Monaco Williams of Hyattsville, MD; his son-in-law Ken Williams; his two granddaughters, Ella and Charlotte Williams; and his significant other, Elizabeth (Betty Lou) Desmond of Gettysburg, PA. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Lou Green of Frederick, MD, and JoNell Monaco Lytle of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother Daniel Monaco of Brunswick, MD; and his former wife Shirley Donaldson of Port Charlotte, FL. He was preceded in death by his brother F. Donald Monaco of Silver Spring, MD. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. Michael will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and special thanks to SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care and Hospice.
