Albert S. Polk

Albert “Al” S. Polk, age 82, of Chambersburg, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at ManorCare Nursing Home in Chambersburg. He was born February 25, 1939 in Waterfall, PA, the son of the late David and Catherine (King) Polk. Al graduated from Chambersburg High School and proudly served 22 years in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1978. He held the honorary title of Master Chief and worked hard as an aviation inspector and mechanic. He was stationed at USS Oriskany (CVA-34), San Francisco, CA; Patrol Squadron 42 (VP-42); Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, San Diego, CA; a Naval Air Facility (NAF) in Japan; and VRC-50 NAS Cubi Point, Philippines, where his assignment was Fletacsuppron Five Zero. Al served four tours in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was also recognized many times for his good conduct and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, along with many others. He traveled around the equator at least six times in his expeditions, but circled back to his home in Pennsylvania where he lived out the remainder of his years. After his time in the service, he earned a General Education Degree from Southwestern College in California. Al then continued his work as an aircraft mechanic for PD Aviation Services in Alaska; and an aviation mechanic, inspector, and private pilot for United Airlines in California, and Beech Aerospace Services in Mississippi. He also worked for the Flying J while living in San Diego. Al was one of the highest ranking members of the George Washington Mason Lodge #143 in Chambersburg for 30 years. He loved Chinese food and traveling. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Hatashita of California; his son, Lee Polk of California; a grandson, Kyle Hatashita; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five siblings, Martha Neal, Bill, Dave and Larry Polk and an infant sister. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. Memorial Services will be held at a later date with military honors and interment at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
