Alonzo E. Hoffman, Jr., 96, of York Springs, entered into eternal rest Friday, February 14, 2014 at 3:17 PM, with his loving granddaughter and caretaker by his side. He was born in Huntington Township, York Springs on February 11, 1918. He was the son of the late Alonzo Elias Sr. and Ida Ellen [Guise] Hoffman. He was the husband of the late Dorothy [Kennedy] Hoffman, to whom he was married for 55 years. Alonzo was a graduate of Cranberry One Room Schoolhouse and Middletown Air Depot Engineering School. He worked hard to provide for his family. Over the numerous years, he was employed at Foth and Guldon Furniture Factory, Middletown Air Depot, The Box Factory in New Oxford and The Lumber Yard in Carlisle. Whileworking away from the home, he farmed 55 acres with dairy cattle. When family,friends or neighbors needed help or needed to borrow a tool or piece of machinery, he was always available and happy to help. In his leisure, Alonzo enjoyed hunting in all seasons in PA, fishing at Laurel Lake and in his pond, mowing, gardening, woodworking, reading, studying the Bible and spending quality time with his family, friends and neighbors. His stories, jokes and advice will be greatly missed. Alonzo attended Heidlersburg United Brethren in Christ Church for 75 years and was a member for 63 years. Some of his duties over the many years include Sunday School Superintendent, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Financial Secretary, Men's Brotherhood/Missions, numerous Building Committees, President of 5th District Sunday School Association and Treasurer of 5th District Sunday School Association. He also served as Treasurer of the Bermudian Springs School Board in 1952. He leaves to celebrate his life, his daughters, Deborah C. Hunt of Michigan and Margaret P. Kirby of York Springs; grandchildren, Clint Stout, Seth Stout, Carol Myers and Donna Umbleby; great-grandchildren, Tyler Stout, Trevor Stout, Josephine Stout, Amanda Sigel, Sarah Umbleby, Jessica Umbleby, Jason Umbleby and Nathan Umbleby and numerous great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish memories, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Alonzo's life will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Heidlersburg United Brethren in Christ Church, 2736 Heidlersburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325. Reverend Craig Loewen will officiate. A viewing will be held on Monday, February 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Dugan Funeral Home, 111 S. Main Street, Bendersville, PA 17306. Burial will be held in Heidlersburg Cemetery, Heidlersburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heidlersburg United Brethren in Christ Church, 2736 Heidlersburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
