Barry Lynn Black, age 69, Gettysburg, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 surrounded by his loving family at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. He was born September 18, 1954 in Sayre, PA, as the son of the late Roy Harper and Marion Irene (Starner) Black.
Barry graduated in the Class of 1972 from Biglerville High School. Barry was a long-haul truck driver until he started a family and came to work with his dad on the farm in Wenksville. Barry was the President of the Adams County Fruit Growers Association in the mid-1980s. He decided to become a police officer in his late 30s and graduated from IUP Police Academy. He worked as a police officer for Bendersville Borough, Cumberland Township and Eastern Adams Regional, where he served as chief in both Bendersville and Eastern Adams Regional. After his police career, he got his CDL and drove truck again. He recently retired from Adams County HSB after working there as a security guard. He even worked security for Blondie and Terri Clark. Barry was a member of York Springs Global Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Bendersville Volunteer Fire Company and was a 911 dispatcher. He was also Deputized Constable for Tyrone Township. He will be remembered as a lifelong hunter and doggy dad to “Springer”, his Jack Russell Terrier. In his spare time, Barry enjoyed helping with security at the civil war re-enactments in Gettysburg, riding motorcycles and hunting with his close friends. He was affectionately known by his friends and family by his nickname, “Bags”.
Barry is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Janie (Cruz) Black of Gettysburg, formerly of Texas; daughter, Jessica Black and her fiancé, Randy Hofmeister of Chesterbrook, PA; two sons, Dustin Black and his wife, Krysten of Biglerville and Mark Gonzalez and his wife, Celeste Caday of Bristow, VA; five grandchildren, Haven Smith, Jaden Gonzalez, Adelyn Gonzalez, Elijah Gonzalez and Ainsley Black; great-grandchild, Cameron Gonzalez; sister, Terri Lebo and her husband, Jeff of Schuylkill Haven, PA and two nieces, Michelle Gloviak and Danielle Funt.
Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main St., Bendersville. A Public Viewing will take place on Monday, September 9, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 11:00 AM at York Springs Global Methodist Church, 840 Trolley Rd, York Springs, PA 17372, with Pastor Trisha Guise officiating. A Viewing will take place from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the church. A Procession will take place following the service to Wenksville Cemetery at the Wenksville United Methodist Church.
