Bette L. Boyer

Bette L. Boyer, age 93 of Chambersburg, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at The Shook Home in Chambersburg. She was born Thursday, April, 28, 1927 in Mount Carmel, PA, to the late John R. and Mary Anne (Rockwell) Jatko. Bette graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1946. She was employed at the Chambersburg Hospital and spoke fondly of her many years in the Social Services Department. She subsequently worked for the Commonwealth of PA, first in the Department of Revenue and later as a house parent at Scotland School for Veterans Children. After her retirement, she traveled all over the USA as a tour guide with Wolf's Bus Lines. She also enjoyed making beautiful arrangements (and chatting with everyone who came through) in the flower department at Giant Foods on Wayne Avenue. Bette enjoyed performing with Chambersburg Community Theatre, her quintessential role being Yente the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof. She also performed with Conococheague Players. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring for many years and then Central Presbyterian Church. She served as both deacon and elder. Bette volunteered for The Shook Home, Make a Wish Foundation, Totem Pole Playhouse, The Luhrs Center and Chambersburg Hospital. She served as president of Franklin County AARP. She was a member of Chambersburg Garden Club and loved tending to her rose garden. She enjoyed designing for the miniatures division of the Annual Daffodil Show, where she won several ribbons. Bette was a strong and steady influence in the lives of her son, Carl V. Boyer, NY, NY, daughters Lois R. (Lynn C.) Rotz, Chambersburg and Kitty A. (Allen L.) Dugan, Shippensburg. She is also survived by grandchildren Mallory (Neil) Dougherty, Fort Worth, TX, Clayton (Jill) Rotz, Chambersburg, Mitchell Rotz, Alder, MT, Elliott (Rebecca) Lolley, Pittsburgh, and Hannah (Ryan) Rebuck, Chambersburg; step-grandchildren, Amanda (Devin) Rickabaugh, and Tanner Dugan (daughter, Alaura); and great-grandchildren, Willow and Isla Dougherty, Sawyer and Saige Rotz, and Olivia Rebuck. She was predeceased by her sister, Arlene Herb. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 12 at Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg with Scott Bowerman officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM. Facial masks are required to be worn. Private inurnment will be in the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring Cemetery at a later date. Her children are extremely grateful for the loving and professional care that was provided to their mother at The Shook Home. Particularly during this Covid era, the Shook Staff became part of her family. Memorial contributions may be made to The Shook Home, 55 S. Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
