Carol Jean Aley Mcfeely

August 21, 1940 — February 24, 2024

Carol Jean Aley McFeely, 83, formerly of Shippensburg, PA, died after a short illness on February 24, 2024. She was born in New Castle, PA on August 21, 1940, to Rev. Paul E. Aley and Doris Day Aley.

In 1958, Carol graduated from Monongahela High School and enrolled at the Indiana State Teachers College (now IUP), studying English. After serious study and a great deal of fun, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1962. The decision to study at Indiana would change her life in many ways, including meeting Tim McFeely, the love of her life, at a mixer just a few weeks into her freshman year. On July 21, 1962, they were married, enjoying life together every single day.

She began her teaching career that fall at Bethel Park High School. After taking a break to raise her children, she earned a Master’s degree in English from Shippensburg University in 1982. She taught as an adjunct professor at Shippensburg University for many years until pursuing her realtor license, working first for Ebener and Associates, then ReMax until her retirement.

Music was an essential part of Carol’s life. She excelled at playing the flute and piano. She had a beautiful alto singing voice and sang in the church choir. Every Sunday morning, she completed the Washington Post crossword puzzle (in ink) while listening to the music of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Everyone in the house, including Bicey, knew this was precious quiet time for Carol.

Carol was an active member of Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and lead of the Care and Share program for many years. She participated in many activities, enjoying Bible study, and FIFIs. The fellowship and support of the MSPC community was vital for her life’s joys and challenges.

Carol loved fine dining, cooking for family, nightly Jeopardy!, tending her daylily garden, and the joy of a good book. An avid reader, in 8th grade, she began listing every book that she read, numbering over 2,290 books at her passing. Her favorite role was as a parent and grandparent. She treasured her time as a mom and Nana, particularly reading books, hosting holiday celebrations, and bragging about David, Anna, and Robbie to her friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Ida Ritchey, and is survived by her husband of 61 years, Tim McFeely, children Julia (Patrick) Lent and Rick (Kelly) McFeely, grandchildren David McFeely, Anna McFeely, and Robbie Lent, brother Phil (Winne) Aley, and nieces/nephews Heather (Tom) Richardson, John Ritchey, Kristen (Mike) Walker, and Mary Ann Ritchey.
