Carolyn H. Long Mccartney

Carolyn Hope Long McCartney, age 86 of Chambersburg, formerly of Dry Run, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at home. She was born Monday, July 14, 1930 in Shamokin, PA. She was the daughter of the late David M. and Elva Theresa (Crist) Long. Carolyn graduated from Coal Township High School in Shamokin. She was also a graduate of Allentown Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 and subsequently received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Shippensburg University. She was employed as the school nurse by the Fannett-Metal School District for 30 years. She was a life member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Am Vets. Devoting her life in service to others, she volunteered with numerous organizations and initiatives throughout her life-time. Most notably, she served the American Red Cross as a volunteer trainer for CPR and First Aide and assisted with disaster relief efforts both locally and far afield. She was recognized as the Red Cross volunteer of the year. She served on the Board of Directors for the Valleys Community Medical Center, was a volunteer with the Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council and many, many others. She was honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant from the US Army in 1955 after serving for three years in various posts including the 121st Evacuation Hospital in Yong Dong Po, South Korea during the Korean Conflict. She received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Unit Meritorious Commendation and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation for her service. Carolyn was married to the late F. Fred McCartney. She is survived by son, Michael F. McCartney of Dry Run, daughter, Terry J. Shade of Chambersburg, granddaughters, Erin M. Rozniakowski of Havertown, Lauren F. McCartney of Oak Park, MN, Melissa M. McCartney of Bowie, MD, Jessica L. Briggs of Blairs Mills, Emily J. Hull of Chambersburg, great-grandchildren, Kenley and Sebastian Rozniakowski, Paige Hope Hull, Charlotte Briggs, Finley Hottle, sisters, Mary Jane Filarski and Sandra Gibble. She was preceded in death by her husband and brother, David M. Long, MD. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 18 at Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church, 16950 Main Street, Spring Run with Pastor Meagan Boozer officiating. A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM until time of services. Military rites will be provided by James McCartney Post #232 American Legion Colorguard.
