Charles “Brian” Greenawalt, age 70, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at his home in Fayetteville. He was born March 4, 1953 in Hazleton, PA, as the son of the late Charles Roscoe and Vivian Ida (Ludwig) Greenawalt.
Brian graduated in the Class of 1971 from Hazelton Senior High School. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA and received a Master’s Degree in 1996 at George Washington University in Washington, DC. In April 1976, Brian was commissioned as an ensign in the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For his first assignment he served as a junior officer aboard NOAA Ship DAVISON, conducting hydrographic surveys in Alaska, Puget Sound, and San Francisco Bay. On another assignment, he planned and executed hydrographic surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, Cape Cod and Southeast Alaska as the Field Operations Officer on the NOAA Ship MT MITCHELL. He was later assigned to the Mapping and Charting Branch. There he analyzed nautical charts, and assisted with procuring and installing a LAN. Later as Chief Operations Branch, he operated an instrument and equipment lab in support of the field operations. He was later assigned as the Executive Officer aboard the NOAA Ship WHITING, where he surveyed in Delaware and the Texas region. When he completed that job he returned to NOAA, Hydrographic Surveys Branch in Silver Spring, MD as the resident expert working as a technical advisor for contract surveys and program office liaison for these multi-million-dollar contracts. Brian retired from Active Duty in 1996 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Brian was proud of his twenty-year career experience in geodetic surveying and nautical charting as he traveled throughout the United States to serve his country. He returned to NOAA as a federal civilian working contracting issues. He retired in 2007 and moved to Penn National in Fayetteville, PA. He was a member of Waynesboro Model Railroad Club in Greencastle, Institute for Retired Persons, Eastern Division of Track Circuit Assister (TCA), and the Society of American Military Engineers, and the Hydrographic Society of America. In his spare time, Brian enjoyed fishing, model trains and buildings, vegetable gardening, calligraphy, reading, birding, enjoy eating out locally, air brushing, and car shows.
Brian is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Ione (Chiedi) Greenawalt of Fayetteville; two sisters, Donna Bartron (John), Tunkhannock, PA and Catherine Egan (Greg), Fairbanks, AK; nephew, Aaron Bartron (Kelly), and their children, Elena, Grace, James and Peter and his beloved cat, Cordie. He was loved by family and many friends throughout his life.
Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg, Memorial Services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg, PA 17257, with Pastor Kevin Brophy officiating. A Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date.
