He was born on Wednesday, December 10, 1930 near Gettysburg, to the late George V. and Mary V. (Topper) Smith. Mike enlisted into the United States Army in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1955. He had a 46-year career as a truck driver at H.E. Pitzer Trucking, H.C. Gabler and Knouse Foods. After his retirement, he moved to Haines City, FL for approximately ten years where he worked part-time for Walt Disney World as a driver. Mike and his wife, Florence, have lived in the Gettysburg area since 2005, where he continued a part-time career as a driver at Jacoby Transportation. He enjoyed traveling, camping and embracing his family and friendships. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Gettysburg, a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 15, The American Legion Post 202 and The Fraternal Order of the Eagles #1562. Mike is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florence N. (Patterson) Smith. He is also survived by three daughters, Deborah and husband Ronald Althoff of Quarryville, Sharon and husband Donald Jacoby of Gettysburg, Joan and husband John Baugher, Jr. of Aspers. Also surviving are two sons, Michael and wife Cindy Smith of Aspers, and Phillip Smith and significant other Jeannie Rohler of New Oxford. He has seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include five sisters, Gladys Felix, Helen Little, Doris Busbey, Joan Gebhart, all of Gettysburg, Alice Weaver of Fresno, CA and two brothers Paul Smith of New Oxford and Claude Smith of Littlestown He was preceded in death by his grandson, Daron Jacoby, granddaughter Janel Baugher and three siblings, Mildred Neiderer, Annie Smith and John Smith. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 6 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 22 West High Street, Gettysburg, with Reverend Father John Kuchinski officiating. Family will hold visitation from 12:30 until the time of service at 2:00 PM. A military interment will be held immediately following the service at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, 1380 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
