Daniel M. Bushman

Daniel M. Bushman, age 81, of Biglerville passed away Monday, June 15, 2015 at his home. He was born Saturday, July 29, 1933 in Gettysburg, the son of the late Ernest D. and Elma Grace (Klepper) Bushman. Dan graduated from Biglerville High School in 1951. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1954 with a B.S. in Political Science, where he also played on the Bullets baseball team. He began his teaching career at Biglerville High School in 1956, which he continued for 46 years. Dan had many disciplines but he was most noted for his teaching of the Latin program, including the yearly Ides of March celebration. In 1989, he was a Finalist for the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. During his tenure, he was the athletic trainer from 1975 until his retirement. He also coached basketball, baseball and football in both junior and senior high programs. Dan took great pride in the fact that he taught three generations in many families of the Upper Adams area. He, along with his wife Catherine, chaperoned many trips overseas. Dan assisted with many graduation ceremonies over the years, well into his retirement. He was the president of Upper Adams Little League from 1969 - 1977. He ran a summer activities program at the high school for many years. In the summer, he was responsible for the mowing and grounds maintenance for the district. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Wenksville. In his younger days, Dan played baseball in the South Penn baseball league. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed taking his grandsons hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many trips to Skyline Drive. One of his most memorable trips was a trip to Alaska. He was an avid bridge player. His greatest passion was watching his grandsons play in their athletic events. He served in the US Air force from 1954 until 1956 where he attained the rank of First Lieutenant. His wife Catherine M. (Crum) Bushman passed away September 26, 2012. He is survived by a daughter, Susan B. and husband Tom May of Biglerville, a son, George D. and wife Cindy Bushman of East Berlin, three grandsons: Christopher M. and wife Kristy May of Hawthorne, CA, Francis J. May III and wife Patricia May of Telford and Andrew W. and wife Keri May of Lansdale; three great-grandsons: Daniel R. and Joseph A. May of Telford and Connor M. May of Hawthorne, CA. Brother, G. David Bushman, preceded him in death. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 22 at St. James Lutheran Church, 2011 Wenksville Road, Biglerville with Reverend Martin Young officiating. Interment will be in Wenksville Cemetery. A viewing will be held Sunday, June 21 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, at Biglerville Senior High School, 161 N. Main Street, Biglerville.
