Donald C. Hartzel

March 22, 1939 — January 18, 2024

Donald C. Hartzel, age 84 of New Oxford, formerly of Arendtsville, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024 at UPMC Hanover. He was born Wednesday, March 22, 1939 in Arendtsville the son of the late Ira C. and Evelyn G. (Herman) Hartzel.


Don graduated from Biglerville High School in 1957. He was an employee/owner of Baker's Electronics, Gettysburg along with the Baker family from 1960 to 2009. He was a life member of the Arendtsville Fire Co. where he served as chief from 1984 to 1989 and also held other offices. He was a charter member of the Arendtsville Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Award. Don had just received his 50 year award from the Lions. He was a member of Zion UCC in Arendtsville his entire life. He served on the church consistory numerous times. He served in the US Army Reserve from 1957 until 1965 where he earned the rank of Sergeant.


He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois A. (Group) Hartzel. He is also survived by two daughters, Kimberly A. and husband Jay Johnson of Arendtsville, Diane L. and husband Mark Lower of Leonardtown, MD, one son, Philip D. and wife Amanda Hartzel of Canton, GA, seven grandchildren, Scott and wife Tara Johnson, Matt Johnson, David and wife Alex Lower, Candace and husband Justin Redman, Michelle and husband Brandon Gilbert, Jonathan and wife Sara Hartzel, Caroline and husband Seth Reedy, eight great-grandchildren, Tyler and Asher Johnson, Harper Gilbert, Evelyn and Henry Lower, Beau and Gloria Reedy, Jack Redman, two brothers, Richard H. and wife Jane Hartzel of Fayetteville, and Fred E. and wife Ann Hartzel of Plymouth, MN. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson Nolan Gilbert.


Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Zion United Church of Christ, 3 Gettysburg Street, Arendtsville with Reverend Heather Kurtz officiating. Private interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
