Donald L. Howard, age 83 of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Gettysburg Hospital. He was born Wednesday, July 17, 1935 in Kansas City, KS, the son of the late Harold and Oneta (McColloca) Howard. Donald graduated from Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS in 1953. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in 1974 from American University in Washington D.C. He retired from the Department of Commerce Census Bureau in Suitland, MD in 1990. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg and Good Samaritan Lodge #336 Free and Accepted Masons of Gettysburg, where he served as Worshipful Master. He volunteered for several organizations including treasurer of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Society in Gettysburg. He had coached and was president of the Boys and Girls Club in Camp Springs, MD. Don was a collector of lead toy soldiers, stamps and other memorabilia. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958 and then spent four years in the Naval Reserves. He is survived by his wife, Betty A. (Durboraw) Howard, to whom he was married for 60 years. He is also survived by two sons, Steven L. and wife Patricia Howard and Keith A. and wife Valerie Howard, four grandchildren, Joshua Howard, Stephanie and husband Matthew Moorefield, Jacob Howard and Sarah Howard. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, June 14 at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York Street, Gettysburg with Reverend Michael Allwein officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Adams County Allied Veterans, will be in Evergreen Cemetery at 2:00 PM. A visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until time of services. Masonic Services will be held at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
