Doris Elizabeth Hartzel

October 7, 1929 — June 15, 2024

Doris “Nanny” Elizabeth Hartzel, age 94, of Arendtsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Gettysburg Hospital. She was born October 7, 1929 in Bonneauville, Adams County, PA, as the daughter of the late George H. and Marie C. (Keiser) Long.


Doris was a graduate from Delone Catholic High School. She was married on June 25, 1948 to her late husband, Robert R. Hartzel, Sr. and started her family. She retired on 1992, as a Head Bank Teller at ACNB in Arendstville after working for close to 40 years. She was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Orrtanna. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 202 in Gettysburg, a Ladies Auxiliary member of Arendtsville Fire Company, a leader in Brownies and Girl Scouts, she coached girls’ softball in the area and she volunteered with the church and helped with their picnics. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed sewing, marbles, playing bridge, BINGO, jazz music and was known for going out dancing. She was an avid sports fan, and loved watching the Phillies baseball, Eagles football and watching horse races. Her family remembers her as being really family oriented, making family meals and cooking for holidays. She loved spending time with her siblings, grandchildren and family members. She was an excellent caregiver to her husband when he was sick. She will be missed by all who knew her.


Doris is survived by her loving son, Robert “Bob” R. Hartzel, Jr. of Arendtsville; six grandchildren, Adam S. Tuckey and his partner, Dylan Rabold, Samantha Tuckey, Ryan Hartzel, Tyler Hartzel and his wife, Bryanna, Brooke Hartzel SGT and Justin Hartzel; three great-grandchildren, Hailey, Jade and Harlee Alexandra Rabold-Tuckey; four sisters, Charlotte Folkenroth, Phyllis Chrismer, Darlene Long, Mary Lee Noel; one brother, Joseph Long; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-greats. In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her baby son, Kenneth R. Hartzel; daughter, Elaine Marie Tuckey and five brothers, Mark, Bernard, Melvin, Levere and Burnell Long.


Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main St., Bendersville. A Mass of Christian Burial Service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, 1095 Church Rd, Orrtanna, PA 17353, with Msgr. William Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in St. Ignatius Loyola Church Cemetery. A Public Viewing will take place on Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 6:00 PM until the time of Vigil Services at 7:30 PM at Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., Bendersville.
