Elaine Greenberg Bowen Spencer of Shippensburg died June 28, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Chambersburg, Elaine was the daughter of the late Dr. Martin and Helen “Mickey” (Lyon) Greenberg. She graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1966, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America. In November 1970, she earned her B.S. and M.Ed. in Early Elementary Education and Library Science from Shippensburg University, where she was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Ms. Spencer taught for 36 years in the Chambersburg Area School system. In her first three years, she taught first grade. For the rest of her career, she taught third graders. She thrived on the challenge of helping at-risk youngsters learn needed skills and celebrated every milestone. In 1966, Ms. Spencer was recognized by the Franklin County School Board for intervention of at-risk students and in 1997, she was nominated for PA Teacher of the Year. In 1997-1998, the school district named her Teacher of the Year and in 2000 she was nominated for Disney Teacher of the Year. In 2004-2005, Ms. Spencer was named to Who’s Who in American Teachers. She retired in 2006. For twenty-two years, Ms. Spencer served as the Treasurer of Congregation Sons of Israel in Chambersburg. She was a frequent Mahjong player and also completed 32 scuba dives. She was active in the PA Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa and served in many leadership positions. During her brief illness, fellow teachers, former students, members of ADK, AFG, and her synagogue, along with long-time friends showered her with cards, visits, and loving support. Her family is especially grateful to her hospice team: Amani, Ruth, Tina, Tabitha, and Ashley.
