Elva Mae (Johnson) Kroeger, age 88, of Chambersburg, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Brookview at Menno Haven in Chambersburg. She was born Saturday, December 17, 1932 in Beacon, NY, the daughter of the late Edward T. and Viola (Smith) Johnson. Elva graduated from Beacon High School in 1951. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Fine Arts from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York in 1955. She was employed by Jack Gaughen Realty, formerly Garman Realty, for 31 years. While there, she won numerous awards. Before getting her real estate license she taught in the Chambersburg Area School District and the Fairfield School District. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Chambersburg and directed the children’s choirs there for over 40 years. Elva participated in the Chambersburg Community Theatre for many years. She was an accomplished vocalist and sang in the Community Chorus as well as her church choirs. She was a voracious reader who loved to travel and hosted a foreign exchange student. She loved animals and supported the SPCA. She was a PIAA official for swimming and umpired for little league. She was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America teaching merit badge classes. Elva loved the Chambersburg community. She was a recipient of the Athena Leadership Award in 2006 (recognizing women in leadership and community). She volunteered for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Capitol Theatre and Council for the Arts. She is survived by two daughters, Susan E. and husband Jeff Major of Fairfax, VA, Amy J. Kroeger of Phoenix, AZ, one son, Stephen O. Kroeger and wife Mary Mitchell of Fort Myers, FL, two sisters, Doris H. Filkins of Fishkill, NY, Patricia A. and husband Louis Weissman of Bellevue, WA and she was much loved by her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Nella S. Hughes and one brother, John E. Johnson. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church, 43 W. Washington Street, Chambersburg. A reception will follow immediately afterward until 5:00 PM at the outdoor pavilion and pond in the back of Menno Haven which is located on Village Parkway across from unit 160. Graveside services were held in Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Fishkill, NY in January 2021. Memorial contributions may be made to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201 and Capital Theatre Center, 159 S. Main Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
