Eugene Glenroy Mortorff, age 70 of East Berlin, passed away on May 25, 2024, at Inners Creek Nursing Home in Dallastown, PA, after a long illness and battle with early onset dementia. He was the son of the late George and Evelyn (Heller) Mortorff. He was born April 19, 1954, in Carlisle, PA.
Eugene grew up in Gardners, PA and graduated from Carlisle High School in 1972. He left the farm life to go to Wesley College in Dover, DE. When he graduated from college, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard and earned the rank of Lieutenant until he retired in Washington, DC. After he retired from the US Coast Guard, he attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County and Goucher University, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education. Eugene then went into teaching where he taught at Arundel High School and Southern High School.
He taught civics, history and psychology in the History and Humanities Department at Southern High School. He then moved to East Berlin, PA to teach at Westminster High School in Carroll County, MD where he taught History and Humanities until his retirement. He enjoyed volunteering his time with the Boy Scouts while serving in the US Coast Guard and when he retired from the US Coast Guard he served as their Scoutmaster in several states.
Eugene was a member of the James A. Garfield Camp #1 of the Sons of the Union of the Civil War and served as the Commander and Chief of their organization from 2015 – 2016. He also belonged to the Good Samaritan Masonic Lodge #336 in Gettysburg, PA. Eugene also enjoyed singing in several barbershop quartets.
His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren on the slopes, boats, trails, and going camping with them. He also enjoyed gardening, hiking, skiing, sailing and kayaking down his favorite rivers. He also enjoyed taking rides on rollercoasters and being a vendor running the City Island Steam Engine Train and Hershey Parks Steam Engine Train.
Eugene was the youngest of five children, he is survived by his wife Linda Sue Austin of 48 years; his sons Christopher Lee and George Robert and his wife Deana. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Alexandar, Caitlin, William, Harrison and Coleson Mortorff, and several nieces and nephews.
Professional arrangements are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 S. Main Street, Bendersville, PA 17306. A Viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, from 1:00 -2:00 PM with a Celebration of Life Service in Honor of Eugene held at 2:00 PM at Dugan Funeral Home. Full Military Honors will be held at the services at the Funeral Home.
