James S. Carnes

James S. Carnes, age 92, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016. He was born June 21, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio. James was a partner in the law firm of Tricarichi Carnes from 1952-1992 and specialized in criminal defense. He attended Kent State University and Case Western Reserve University (B.A. 1948) and received his LL.B. from Case Western Reserve University in 1950. James served in the WWII Asiatic Pacific campaign and in the Korean Occupation (1942-1946). During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Court of Military Appeals (1950-1952). James served the City of Cleveland as Assistant Police Prosecutor (1960-1964) and Chief Police Prosecutor (1967-1968). He had been Law Director/Solicitor for Newburgh Heights (1982-1990) and was a former law instructor at Cuyahoga Community College. He held membership and offices in numerous organizations: Ohio State Bar Association, Cleveland Bar Association (former Trustee), Cuyahoga County Bar Association (former Trustee), Cuyahoga County Law Directors Association and Trustee, Legal Aid Society, Cleveland (1970-1976) and the Cleveland Academy and national Association of Trial Lawyers. James held life memberships in the VFW, NAACP and Vietnam Veterans of America. He had been a Masonic Worshipful Master (1960-1961) and a member of Shriners International. James had a lifelong love of sports and activity, playing baseball, bowling, playing golf, ballroom dancing and watching Ohio State football. James was preceded in death by the late Samuel James Carnes and Helen (Bateman) Carnes. Following the death of his beloved wife, Elaine Millington Carnes, James moved to Pennsylvania in 2008, near his surviving daughters, Wendy Carnes and Becky Carnes. He always said he had a good life.
