James L. Godfrey

James “Jim” L. Godfrey, age 90, of Newburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2023 at his daughter’s home in Fulks Run, VA. He was born July 2, 1932 in Rock, WV, as the son of the late Ezra Z. and Regina M. (Wright) Godfrey.

James attended school in West Virginia. He went on to join the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He owned and operated painting/contracting business in Indian Head, MD and also remodeled homes in Bedford, PA. He was a former member of Newville Assembly of God and more recently attended Mowersville Brethren in Christ Church. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and building cabinets with vintage wood. His family knows him best for being a “Jack Of All Trades”, and even more so, he was self-taught.

James is survived by four daughters, Helen M. Williams (Denny) of Fayetteville, Deborah M. Godfrey of Shippensburg, Sabrina L. Whitsel of Harrisburg and Cristen H. Wittig (Timothy) of Fulks Run, VA; two sons: James D. Godfrey of Bedford and Steven L. Godfrey of State College, PA, sister, Joan M. Hoyle of Lynchburg, VA; brother, Thomas Godfrey (Annemae) of Edgewood, MD; adopted son, Hayden Godfrey; daughter-in-law, Nancy Godfrey of Shippensburg; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. (Irwin) Godfrey, who passed January 4, 2023, son, Morgan D. Godfrey, Sr., who passed in March 5, 2021 and three sisters, Velma Shelton, June Turner and Georgie Chaney.

Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. Private Graveside Services will be held by the family in Air Hill Cemetery in Chambersburg.
