Jerry L. Swope

Jerry L. Swope, age 71 of Shippensburg, surrounded by his family, danced his way into the arms of Jesus on March 9, 2025, after a courageous battle with ALS. He was born May 15, 1953 in Chambersburg to the late Myles R. and Mary Louise (Hooper) Swope.

Jerry was a 1971 graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School. He retired as the codes enforcement/zoning officer for Southampton Township, Cumberland County, and was a member of the Shippensburg First Church of God. He was a West End Fire and Rescue member for over 50 years, where he served as treasurer and was active with the fire police and was EMA coordinator for Southampton Township, Cumberland County. Jerry was a charter member of South Newton Volunteer Fire Company in 1976.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Wilma L. (Penner) Swope; sisters, Kimberly Sloop and husband, Bradley of Sherman’s Dale and Tina Schuj and husband, Thomas of Bartlett, TN; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Jerry is also survived by his extended family, “brother”, Bernie and Cathy Eiswert and Tiffany Friese, who were caregivers to Jerry; Robert and Cheryl Penner and Barbara and Steven Bell.

Professional services have been entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Shippensburg First Church of God, 121 E. King Street, Shippensburg. Reverend Gary Hornbaker and Reverend Rodney Bistline will officiate services. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until the time of service.
