John “J.C.” A. Coons, age 74, of Shippensburg, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Wellspan Chambersburg Hospital. He was born November 13, 1946 in Walnut Bottom, the son of the late David Franklin and Irene Elizabeth (Rhodes) Coons. J.C. attended Newville High School and owned and operated Johnny’s Garage for 15 years as a mechanic for small machinery. He was a member of the South Newton Twp. Fire Co. in Walnut Bottom, Minnequa Social Club in Shippensburg, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Carlisle, the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post #6168, and the American Legion Post #223. He enjoyed going to yard sales and participating in selling his own merchandise at the Silver Spring flea market. His hobbies included helping anyone and everyone whether it came to vehicles or just needing a handy man. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Deborah R. (Rebok) Coons of Shippensburg; his previous wife, Barbara Gutshall of Carlisle; two sons, Bobby J. (Jeannie) Coons of Orrstown and William Scott (Anna) Coons of Newville; two daughters, Lori J. (Alan) Arnold and Sherry D. (Kelley) Myers both of Shippensburg; two step-children, Jeremiah Naugle and Crystal; three granddaughters, Bryce Arnold, Shana (Marc) Bonetti, and Paytan Myers; one grandson, Christopher Coons; one great-granddaughter, Josefina Bonetti; four step-grandchildren, Everly, Angel, Faith, and Hope; six sisters, Dorothy Jeannie, Alice, Dixie (Ron) Weaver, Bonnie, Darlene, and Connie; and three brothers, Jackie (Barb) Coons, David Sonny (Dixie) Coons, and Thomas Coons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Johnny Lee Coons; four brothers, Stanley, Franklin, Eddie, and Marlin Coons; and one sister, Mildred. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 28 at the Lurgan United Brethren Church, 7900 Roxbury Road, Shippensburg, with Pastor Harold Yeager officiating. A reception will follow services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023 or the Tribute Fund at DuganFH.com to help defray the cost of funeral expenses.
