John J. McGrath, age 86 of Shippensburg, died peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Carlisle Regional Hospital. Formerly of Huntington, NY, he lived in Marion, NC since 1987 prior to moving to Shippensburg in 2006. John was born November 12, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late Thomas McGrath and Catherine (Maher) McGrath. He was a graduate of St. Michael's Diocesan High School (1947) and St. Francis College (1951) both in Brooklyn. He received a graduate degree in Business Administration from New York University (1956) and a diploma for the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University (1971). He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from the National Westminster Bank (NKA Bank of America) as a Vice President after 27 years. He also had an avocation of teaching business administration, spending 17 years as adjunct professor at Dowling College, Oakdale, NY and another 17 years as an instructor at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, NC. After retirement, he volunteered with the McDowell county Habitat for Humanity in North Carolina for 15 years, serving as President for eight years. During this time, he worked on 13 houses. He was a member of American Legion Post 46, Chambersburg and served as a Rotarian for over 30 years. John is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, in addition to two sons, Richard (Laura Jean) and Thomas (Kelly), two daughters, Mary Lee (Steve) Gage and Theresa (Hank) Suominen, along with eight grandsons, three granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. have been entrusted with professional arrangements. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of the Visitation Parish, 305 N. Prince Street, Shippensburg with Reverend Father Dwight Schaline. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 2 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg. Interment will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Angela's House, PO Box 5052, Hauppange, NY 11788 (home of a grandson) or Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County, Inc., 1331 South 7th Street, Chambersburg PA 17201.
