John Barry Powell

June 28, 1944 — March 11, 2024

John Barry Powell, age 79 of Gettysburg, passed away Monday, March 11, 2024 at his home. He was born Wednesday, June 28, 1944 in Gettysburg, the son of Doris I. (Seiferd) Warrenfeltz of York and the late John E. Powell.


Barry graduated from Fairfield High School in 1962, but still enjoyed socializing with his former 1962 BHS classmates. He served as a Naval Aviation Firefighter with the US Navy from 1962 to 1965 and retired from Inland Container in Biglerville after working there for 30 years. He was a member of the Ira E Lady American Legion Post 262, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Conewago Valley AARP Chapter 4370. In his free time, Barry enjoyed tinkering on his computers while listening to classics from the 50’s and 60’s and was always up for a raunchy joke.


He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis J. (Baltzley) Powell, his mother, Doris, two daughters, Kristina Powell of Mechanicsburg, and Patricia (Powell) Barton of Dublin, CA; one son, Timothy Powell also of Dublin, CA; two sisters, Linda Corbin of Hanover, Peggy Buohl of York, three brothers, Michael Powell of Hanover, Patrick Currens of El Paso, TX, and Stacy Powell of Gardners and two grandsons, Leopold Barton and Alexander Barton of Dublin, CA. He was preceded in death by infant son Barry E. Powell and half-brother Nevin Currens.


Private services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main St., Bendersville. A celebration of life with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Ira E. Lady American Legion Post 262, Biglerville, at the legion woods pavilion. Private Interment will be in Benders Church Cemetery.
