Joseph C. Kligge

Joseph Calvin Kligge, age 90 of Newburg died on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. Joseph was born Sunday, July 18, 1920 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Frederick and Anna (Thoms) Kligge. For much of his life he was employed as a truck driver, but was also a skilled carpenter and craftsman and mechanic. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II taking his basic combat training in Camp Croft, SC. In1944 he was sent overseas on the "Queen Elizabeth", was assigned to the 359thInfantry Regiment and landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France where he joinedGeneral Patton's 3rd Army. He was wounded in France, August 18, 1944 in the famed "Falaise Pocket". After recovering from his wounds in England he was assigned to the 156th Infantry in France and after VE Day he was assigned to the 707th MP Battalion in Belgium.In 1946 he returned home on the ship "Tufts Victory". His medals and citations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal,European -African - Middle Eastern Campaign Medal,World War II Victory Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. He is survived by his sons Frederick (husband of Mai) Kligge, St. Lawrence, PA and Thomas (husband of Janet, known to many as Brandii) Kligge, Newburg, PA; grandchildren: Le-Duong, Elizabeth, Caroline, Zaun, Ra, No, Joseph III, and Jessica Kligge; and four great-grandchildren. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 56 years, Beatrice (Winslow) Kligge who died on May 31, 1997 and his son, Joseph Calvin Kligge, Jr. Professional services are being handled by Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. An informal gathering to honor Joseph will be held on Sunday, October 24th at 2:00 pm at 107 Minick Drive in Newburg. Interment with military honors will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Feasterville, PA at a future date. For more information on services please call 717-423-6561.
