Husband, father, and grandfather, Kenelm Winslow, III died peacefully on January 28, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Newton, Massachusetts on May 20, 1942, Kenelm graduated from Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania in 1961. He joined the United States Navy in 1962, serving in active duty until October 1966. He met his wife, Caroline McCulloch Winslow, in 1962, and they married in 1967.
That same year, Kenelm and Caroline moved to Shippensburg and Kenelm worked for seven years at Shippensburg University Dining Services. Kenelm began making brooms in the early 1970s, and he continued in that craft for more than 45 years. He was celebrated for his broom making, and he exhibited at numerous fairs and festivals and was a member of the PA Guild of Craftsmen. In addition to a successful career as an artisan, Kenelm appreciated and dealt in 18th and 19th-century American antiques.
Kenelm and Caroline settled on a farm outside of Newburg, PA in 1971. Motivated by the back-to-land movement, especially the 1954 publication of Helen and Scott Nearing’s book, Living the Good Life, Kenelm and Caroline embraced a lifestyle that prioritized respect and gratitude for the natural world. They inspired many and instilled a deep love and care for nature in their children and grandchildren.
Kenelm was enthusiastic about life and its many facets. He traveled extensively while in the Navy and especially enjoyed his time living in Turkey. Kenelm had a love for culinary arts and was a music enthusiast. Social and cultural history, especially of South-Central Pennsylvania, were great interests, and he amassed an archive of paper records and oral histories documenting the area’s history. Kenelm was eager to share his knowledge and, as a result, was an incredible storyteller. He led his life with a fierce desire to be a friend to all.
Kenelm was predeceased by his father, Kenelm, II, in 1972; his brother, Glenn, in 1995; and his mother, Marjorie (née Keyes), in 2007. Kenelm is survived by his wife, Caroline, and their children, Kenelm, IV, and his wife, Debra, and Margaret and her husband, Stephen. His is also survived by his sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Joseph), his and Caroline’s grandson and two granddaughters and their two nieces and nephews.
