M. Josephine Riley

M. Josephine Riley, age 90 of Gettysburg died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Green Acres Nursing Home. She was born Sunday, October 19, 1919 in Bendersville, a daughter of the late John W. and Alice J. (Hoverter) Black. Josephine graduated from Biglerville High School in 1938. She graduated from Harrisburg Hospital Nursing School in 1941 as a registered nurse and was employed by Gettysburg Hospital for 33 years before retiring in 1974. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bendersville. She also taught Sunday School for 40 years. Josephine had been active and served on the boards of the following organizations: Visiting Nurse Association, Adams Co. Cancer Society, Mental Health Assoc, American Red Cross, and Hospice of Adams Co. where she served on the Steering Committee. She was a member of the Soroptimist Club of Adams Co. and she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the American Heart Association, AARP, AARP 1776 Chorus, NARFE, PNA, ANA, Biglerville Historical Society, Upper Adams Senior Citizens, Sr. ACTS of Adams Co., and Private Duty Nurse Association of Adams County and was a life member of the Harrisburg Hospital Alumni Assoc. Josephine also helped to establish the LPN program at Hanover School district. Josephine was named Woman of the Year of Adams County in 1989 by the Soroptimist Club of Adams County. Her former husband Harold R. Delp died in 1973.She was also predeceased by her husband Charles K. Riley who died in 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Blocher and a brother George W. Black, both of Biglerville; two granddaughters, four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Davis and a brother, Lawrence Black. Professional services are being handled by Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 S. Main Street, Bendersville. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 19 at 1:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 126 Church Street, Bendersville with the Rev. Robert S. McEllroy III officiating. Private interment will be in Biglerville Cemetery. A visitation will be held in the church from 12 noon until time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, P.O.
