Michael Joseph McHugh

May 31, 1950 — September 28, 2025

York Springs

Michael Joseph McHugh passed away Sunday September 28, 2025 surrounded by friends and family.

Michael was born in Yonkers, NY on May 31, 1950 the son of Joseph F. McHugh and Kathryn M. (Logiudice) McHugh.

He graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in New Rochelle, NY. He played many sports through his childhood, but his true love was baseball and the New York Yankees. Michael spent the summers with family friends on a farm in Kane, PA where he learned to love the countryside and swore he would leave New York to live in the farmlands of Pennsylvania.

After graduating from Fordham University in 1972, his dream became reality; he left New York to enjoy the good life of Adams County, PA in 1973. Over the years, Michael raised many animals including horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, and goats at “McHugh Manor” in Latimore Township.

Michael worked for Kinney Shoe Corp. & Woolworth Corp. in various management positions for over 25 years from June of 1972 until October of 1997. His business ventures gave him the opportunity to see much of the country and he always claimed these were the best years of his career. The last years of his working life were spent with Northrop Grumman as a site manager, Celerity Consultants as a technical director and WellSpan Health as a project manager where he implemented many life-saving computer applications. Michael retired from WellSpan after nearly 10 years of service, but continued to work part-time as the church secretary at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in York Springs.

He felt a strong connection to public service and was proud to be an official of Latimore Township from 1980 until 2005 including as an elected supervisor, township zoning commissioner, and police commissioner for the joint Latimore-York Springs Police Commission. As supervisor, Michael, along with his co-supervisor, Mike Juliana, were instrumental in many major projects over the years including initiating one of the first recycling programs in south central Pennsylvania, the birth of the Latimore Township Park and implementing the town’s zoning ordinances to conserve the township’s rural roots.

Michael was proud of his Irish-Italian Catholic roots. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and Sons of Italy. Many of Michael’s friends say he was most proud to be a father. He volunteered at many of his children’s activities over the years.

Michael is survived by his wife Ann L. (Dietrich-Senft); his son, Joseph G. McHugh, his wife Erin, and their daughter Maria; his daughter Annie T. Kergick, her husband Dennis, and their daughter Charlotte; his stepdaughter Kristen Zirkle, her husband Corey, and their daughters Alaina, Ellie, and Hadley; stepson Peter Leathery and his son Connor; and two sisters, Pat Brazel and Kathryn Rose – and his loyal dog Bogie.
