Michael “Pop” Thomas Atwell, age 74, of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2024, surrounded by his family at his home in Gettysburg. He was born on March 7, 1950 in Marion, Virginia, as the son of the late George and Catherine (Culop) Atwell.
Michael graduated from Glendale High School in Virginia. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. After the Army, he became a carpenter and worked for his brother’s business, Atwell Construction, for 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post#345 in Sykesville. In his spare time, Michael enjoyed playing horseshoes, cornhole, weight lifting and working out. He also enjoyed taking care of his house with his wife and landscaping.
Mike is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy Lee (Humphrey) Atwell of Gettysburg; four step-daughters, Cindy Stitely of West Virginia, Vicky Stitely of Westminster, MD, Lisa Shiloh of Littlestown, PA and Stacy Stitely and her husband, Carroll Lescalleet of Gettysburg; ten grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one sister, Judy Ledford of Tennessee; his twin brother, Mickey Atwell of Virginia and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Mariner and three brothers, Ronnie, Silver and Danny Atwell.
