Myles E. Starner

Myles E. Starner, age 86 of Aspers, died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the home of his daughter, with his family by his side. He was born Saturday, December 11, 1926 in Menallen Township, Adams County, the son of the late Clayton S. and EmmaJ. (Weigle) Starner. Myles graduated from Biglerville High School in 1945. In high school he received for FFA, the Pennsylvania degree and the American Farmer degree. He was a self employed apple grower for more than 50 years. From 1950 to 1954 Myles served as an apple buyer for Duffy Motts covering PA, MD, NJ and DE. He was a member ofFirst Baptist Church in Gettysburg and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher and on Church Council of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bendersville for many years. He served as a Menallen Twp. supervisor for six years and on the Upper Adams School Board as a director from 1972 to 1978. He served on Adams Co. Agriculture and Conservation Committee. He was appointed to the Adams Co. War Board, Chairman of the Adams County Disaster Committee, Adams Co. Fruit Growers Assoc. as a director, and Adams County Ag and Home Economic Extension service director for 21 years. Myles had received the Adams County Fruit Growers Assoc. Award of Fruit Grower of the Year. He was a voting delegate for the Farm Bureau for the Penn State Board of Trustees. Myles was also known for his long time support of the Biglerville Canners Wrestling team. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1949. He had graduated from Army Administration and Clerical School and served as an army instructor for several years. The army allowed Myles a leave of absence for six months allowing him to Volunteer as a Goodwill Ambassador in Mexico from fall of 1951 to spring of 1952. He was discharged from the army in October of 1953. His wife Dorothy M. (Fuss) Starner died in 2002. He issurvived by four daughters: Arla and husband Dr. Orville McBeth of Biglerville, Laura and husband Mike Trostle of Biglerville, Brenda Starner and husband Dean Speelman of New Oxford, Joyce and husband Daryl Gelnett of Mechanicsburg; one son, Neil and wife Laura (Hertz) Starner of Aspers; 16 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, John and Earl Starner and four sisters: Alvie tenBensel, Edna Sowers, Sara Starner and E. Jean Starner. Professional services are being handled by Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 19, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Gettysburg 1015 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg with Reverend Carl Harris officiating. Interment will be in Bendersville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 AM until time of services.
