Paul “PJ” Ernest Jay, age 93, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2024, surrounded by his family at Paramount Nursing and Rehab in Fayetteville. Paul was born July 6, 1931 in Bedford County, PA, as the son of the late Otis Ernest and Mary Viola (Dibert) Jay.
Paul graduated from Everett High School in Bedford County, PA, where he was a band member and enjoyed playing the tuba and piano. After high school, Paul worked first as a certified milk tester in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties where he met his wife, Nancy. They got married and Paul worked as a farmer. Then went onto be a store manager for Agway and finally was a bus driver for Wolf's Bus Lines. Paul was a member of First Baptist Church of Gettysburg and volunteer for the church treasury committee. He also was a member of the local Lions Club and Judge of the local election committee. Paul volunteered for WellSpan locally for many years. He also volunteered for local nursing homes and Red Cross for the blood drives and surgical center and was a regular donor himself. He was known by his family and friends as a social butterfly. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, croquet, bowling, cards, daily walks and hiking the Appalachian Trail. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Paul is survived by his three loving children, Shelia Jay of Gettysburg; Christine Sweely of Johnson City, TN and Martin Jay of Gardners; four grandchildren, Brittany Jay and her half-brother, Joe Harman, Benjamin Sweely and Carole Sweely; sister, Ruth Smith and her husband, Richard and two nieces, Karen and Kelly. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Nancy Jean Jay, who passed away September 4, 2023; son, Kenneth Jay and daughter, Sharon Jay.
Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main St., Bendersville. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 1:30 PM at First Baptist Church, 1015 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325, with Pastor Carl Harris officiating. A Private Interment will be held in Greenmount Cemetery at a later date.
