Paul R. Settle

Paul R. Settle, age 90 of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the Gardens of Gettysburg surrounded by his loving family. He was born Saturday, March 3, 1928 in Gettysburg, the son of the late Paul M. and Edna S. (Stevens) Settle. Being very athletic, even at an early age, he ran, lifted weights and competed in body building contests. He worked out with his many friends, including famous strongman John Grimek and Bob Hoffman at York Barbell. He often visited bodybuilder Paul Anderson in Georgia. He was a member of the Oldtime Strongman Club that met yearly at the Downtown Athletic Club in NYC. In 1984, at the age of 56, he ran the Boston Marathon. He inspired many to run and exercise. As a teenager, he earned his pilot's license. He was a member of the Gettysburg Barnstormers. Paul graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1946. He was formerly employed by Knouse Foods and Pitzer Brothers Trucking as a truck driver. He was a charter member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Gettysburg. His greatest passion was serving the Lord through church activities at his church and fellowship with friends and family. He enjoyed hunting and going to the family cabin in Potter County. He served in the 3rd Company 2nd Battalion 104th Armored Cavalry Regiment of PA National Guard in Gettysburg during the Korean Conflict. He was a wonderful supportive father to all of his children. He is survived by two daughters, Lisa S. Gray of Gettysburg, Pamela M. and husband David Miserendino of Hanover, one son, Paul C. and wife Jayne Settle of Bendersville, his grandchildren are Addie Scott and her son Tyler, Tara Gorman and Jared Gorman and wife Laura and their children, Jacob and Molly, one sister, Elinor C. (Teeny) Bender of Gettysburg, two brothers, Jack R. Settle and J. William (Bill) Settle both of Gettysburg. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Marion Paulette. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 S. Main Street, Bendersville. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 18 at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 80 Apple Avenue, Gettysburg with Reverend Robert Gray officiating. Interment will be in McKnightstown Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until time of services. Our family wants to thank the church members, friends and personnel at the Gardens of Gettysburg for all their help and support to him and family members through his illness. Memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 80 Apple Avenue, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
