Phyllis W. Givler

Phyllis W. Givler, age 90, of Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Friday, April 1, 1927, in Newville, the daughter of the late George R. and Sara E. (Gussman) Wolfe. Phyllis was a graduate of the Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing. During WWII, she served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. She returned to work at the Carlisle Hospital, working in the operating room, emergency room, obstetrics and nursery. She was the first licensed nursing home administrator at Claremont Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly Cumberland County Nursing Home. She had also worked at Health South Rehab in Mechanicsburg, Leader Nursing Home in Harrisburg and Camp Hill, Audubon Villa in Lititz. She retired from Caledonia Manor Nursing Home, formerly Beverly Enterprises, in Fayetteville. She served as a South Middletown Township supervisor for six years from 2000-2006. She was very committed to her community, serving on many committees for the township, including Emergency Services, Planning Commission, the liaison for South Middleton Twp. Fire Company and Union Fire Co. #1 in Carlisle, where she was a member of both organizations. She was a poll worker for the Republican Party for more than 25 years, where she held various positions. She was also a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #578 in Carlisle. She was a member of the Carlisle First Church of the Brethren. She volunteered at the church performing many tasks and services. She was a former member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church where she served as cradle roll officer, Bible School Teacher and Director. She was involved with the Girl Scouts of America as Camp Nurse, Unit Leader and other various positions. She was a volunteer with the life skills students at the Boiling Springs High School and special needs students at W.G. Rice Elementary. She was also on the building committee for the Yellow Breeches Middle School. Phyllis enjoyed crocheting, knitting, baking bread, attending her grandsons' sporting events and was involved in her grandsons' Eagle Scout projects. She enjoyed traveling and camping and loved spending time with her grandsons and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Dian and husband Lynn F. Myers, Jr. of Carlisle and Donna and husband Gary L. Baum of Carlisle. She is also survived by four grandsons, Matthew Baum of Garnet Valley, active duty Army Cpt. Ryan Baum of Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Anthony Myers of Philadelphia, Evan Baum of Carlisle, four great-grandchildren, Owen Baum, Adelynn Baum, Elizabeth Baum and Henry Baum. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence R. Givler who passed away in August of 1979. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 23 at Hoffman Funeral Home, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle with Pastors Jim and Marla Abe officiating. Interment will follow in Westminster Cemetery. A viewing will be held at Hoffman Funeral Home on Sunday, October 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and on Monday from 9:30 AM until time of services. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 South Main Street, Bendersville. Memorial contributions may be made in Phyllis' name to Save the Lake, PO Box 39, Boiling Springs, PA 17007 or Union Fire Co. No. 1, 35 W. Louther Street, Carlisle, PA 17013 or Citizens Fire Comp.
