Richard Gottshall Moyer, 79, of Biglerville, formerly of Pottstown, and former longtime resident of Royersford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at his home, after valiantly battling leukemia for 11 years.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Paulette Jane (Witman) Moyer; daughter, Karen (Robert) Hendricks of Mechanicsburg; son, Kevin (Jennifer) Moyer of Manassas, VA; brother, Williard G. Moyer of Spring City; four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.
Born on September 7, 1944 in Pottstown, Richard was a son of the late Williard Cassel Moyer and Marie Knausz (Gottshall) Moyer Becker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley G. Lyle of Royersford.
Throughout his life, Richard was dedicated to his family, his country, and the church. A 1962 graduate of Spring-Ford High School, he co-captained the track and cross-country teams, later running many Philadelphia-area 10Ks in his 30s and 40s. Richard served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Jackson, S.C. during the Vietnam era. Professionally, he was a printing pressman who devoted a 43-year-career to Container Corporation of America (CCA) in Valley Forge, which became the world’s largest manufacturer of paper-based packaging products.
A lifelong Lutheran, Richard served three congregations during his lifetime, holding numerous leadership positions such as church treasurer, council member, and a valued member of church softball teams. He was most recently a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Biglerville.
Richard loved outdoor activities with his family, including camping, gardening, and hiking. His competitive spirit, in sports or games of any kind, was legendary. Perhaps his greatest gift was Richard’s sense of humor, which he maintained until his final days. All who knew him were sure to smile and laugh in his presence.
