Robert E. Baker

February 18, 1935 — February 14, 2024

Robert (Bob) E. Baker, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Born on February 18, 1935 in Biglerville, PA to the late Charles E. and Esther M. (Group) Baker, he was the second of four children in the family.

Soon after Bob was born, his family moved to the family farm south of Biglerville. In the late 1940’s, the family transitioned from the farm to a home on South Main Street, Biglerville, and assumed responsibility for Baker’s Meat Market. As a young man, Bob helped run the store and butcher meat. After graduation from Biglerville High School in 1953, Bob started his professional career in the apple industry. In 1955, he started what would become a 45-year career at Duffy Motts (later American Brands and Cadbury Schweppes) in Aspers. After many years of dedicated work, Bob was promoted to plant manager, a position which he held for 24 years prior to his retirement in 2000. Under Bob’s leadership, the Aspers Motts plant was recognized for manufacturing and environmental initiatives.

In 1955, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Louise Nary, and they raised three daughters in Biglerville: Teresa Tincopa, Whittier, CA; Sandra Jumper, Boiling Springs; and Robin Binkley (Todd), New Castle, DE. Bob and Louise remained in the Biglerville area until 1992 when they moved to Boiling Springs. Over the years, Bob and Louise enjoyed camping, tailgating at Penn State football games, traveling to visit family and friends, vacationing at the beach, going for ice cream, and spending time with their grandchildren. Bob was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed feeding and watching the deer at his home.

Always active in the community, Bob joined the Biglerville Fire Company when he was 18 years old and became a life member. He served as Chief for 23 years from 1963-1986. He also served as president of the Adams County Fire Chief Association and Adams County Volunteer Association. Much of his adult life was devoted to the Fire Company, an accomplishment for which he remained very proud until his passing. Additionally, he was a member of Good Samaritan Lodge #336 Gettysburg and other Masonic organizations as well as First Lutheran Church, Carlisle.

In addition to his daughters, Bob is survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Lucille Gillespy and Carolyn Garman. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Baker, and his two sons-in-law, Alan L. Jumper and Luis Tincopa.
