Robert T. Reed

March 26, 1927 — December 4, 2022

Robert Truman Reed of Shippensburg, PA, formerly of Dornsife, PA, peacefully passed away on December 4, 2022. He was 95 years old. Robert was born on March 26, 1927 to Hannah (Zartman) and William Adam Reed, both of Dornsife.


He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Alfreda A. (Peifer), and his four children, Terry Reed and wife, MaryAnn of Sinking Spring, Ronald Reed and wife, Bonnie of Shippensburg, Brenda (Reed) Cline and husband, Brett of Chambersburg, and Kelly Reed and husband, Kenneth Williams of Dartmouth, MA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Laura (Reed) Gerstner and husband, Joshua Gerstner, Emily (Reed) Urso and husband, Lt. Col. Michael Urso, Rachael (Cline) McGarvey and husband, Jonathan McGarvey, David Reed and wife, Chantal (Coren) Reed, Christopher Reed and wife, Kristin (Strickland) Reed, Paul Cline, Anna Gerber-Williams and husband, David Katz, and Delphina Gerber-Williams and husband, Thomas Pisarick; thirteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlie (Reed) Zeiders of Dalmatia, Edith (Reed) Howerter of Dornsife, and Kathryn (Reed) Bordner of Surprise, AZ and 19 nieces and nephews and their families. Robert had three other siblings, now deceased.


Robert served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, before leaving for Germany, Austria, and France where he served as a Private in Battery C Battalion, 2nd Field Artillery Training Regiment. After his father passed away prematurely, Robert was discharged from military duty to care for his mother and siblings. In 1958, he was hired by Purolator Courier Corporation and retired from that position after 30 years of employment. In retirement, Robert worked for Troutman’s Food Service where he enjoyed assisting each year at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Robert was an unwavering Phillies fan. He was an avid wood worker and gardener and was known for his stunning tulips and roses that adorned the village of Dornsife.


Robert was a life-long member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hunter Station where he served on the Cemetery Association and the church council. He was also a proud member of the I.O.O.F. Mahanoy Lodge no. 551 in Dornsife and was honored with an award for Odd Fellow of the Year in 2000, and later for 70 years of service. Robert volunteered for the Line Mountain Food Bank.


Robert was a loving and caring husband of Alfreda for 74 years, and a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, neighbor, and friend. He was a truly amazing person who touched the lives of so many people. He will be missed by all.


Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. A Public Viewing will take place on Thursday, December 8 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 5933 State Route 225, Hunters Station, PA 17823 with Pastor Michael Jarrett officiating. Live-stream of the funeral service will be available at www.EmmanuelLutheranChurch-Dornsife.org. Robert will be laid to rest at Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 44 Ritual Team. An additional Public Viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 7, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
