Robert J. Shoemaker

Robert J. Shoemaker, age 90 of Shippensburg, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Chambersburg Hospital. He was born Wednesday, July 18, 1923 in Shippensburg, the child of the late Robert E. and Helen W. (Coy) Shoemaker. Robert graduated from Shippensburg High School. As a teenager, he worked as a cook with his family at Shoemaker Bar and Restaurant, which his father had opened in 1936. Bob worked there for 53 years before selling it in 1989. He was a member of Durff-Kuhn VFW Post 6168, Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post 223, Cumberland Valley Hose Company and The Hub City Club. He enjoyed woodworking, making trains, and later tables and cabinets. He served in the United States Army during World War II traveling through Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Japan and the Philippines. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his sons, Russell W. "Butch" and wife Sandra Brookens of White Bear Lake, MN, Richard A. "Rick" and wife Judy Shoemaker, Scotland; three grandchildren, Nichol Perricci of White Bear Lake, Jeremy Shoemaker and Meagan Boushell, both of Chambersburg and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 54 years, Peggy L. (Finnegan) Shoemaker, who passed away on August 28, 2012. Sisters, Pauline Fogelsanger and Maxine Kennedy and a brother, William Shoemaker also preceded him in death. Professional services are being handled by Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 15 at Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Shippensburg with Pastors Carroll and Mollie Cool officiating. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Durff-Kuhn VFW Post 6168 and Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post 223.
