Russel M. “Mike” Wertz, age 88 of Aspers, passed away January 15, 2024 at Transitions Healthcare Gettysburg. He was born January 24, 1935 in Onnalinda, PA to the late Michael R. and Mary (Parker) Wertz.
Mike was a member of Benders Lutheran Church. He graduated from Biglerville High School, where he received the Keystone Farmer Award, as a senior. Mike coached pony league, enjoyed hunting and bowling and was an avid attendee of Biglerville High School sporting events. He was known by his “This is Canner Country” sign that adorned his barn. Mike was a dairy farmer until 1986, drove school bus for Jay Thomas for 21 years, was a Butler Township Supervisor for 35 years and drove school van for Jacoby Transport for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce R. (Rice) Wertz; sons, Gregory Wertz and wife, Elaine of York Springs and Jeff Wertz and wife, Jane of Biglerville; daughter, Tina Fissel and husband, Mike of Fairfield; grandsons, Jeremy Fissel and wife, Renee of Pittsburgh and Jared Fissel and wife, Jessica of Orrtanna and great-grandchildren, Nolan Fissel and Gavin Fissel. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anita Kuhn.
Professional services have been entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home, Inc., 111 S. Main Street, Bendersville, where a viewing will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00PM. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Mike will be laid to rest at Biglerville Cemetery.
