Samuel “Jay” Jacob Spiese, III, age 40 of Chambersburg, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018. He was born Sunday, January 1, 1978 in York, the child of Samuel Jacob, Jr. and Nancy Louise (Nolin) Spiese. He was a 1996 graduate of York Catholic High School. After High School he attended Gettysburg College receiving his Bachelor of Arts in History and Religion in 2000. He then went on to earn his teaching certification and then his Master’s degree in Education from Wilson College in 2009. He worked as a teacher for Smithsburg High School in Smithsburg, MD. He was a Civil War reenactor since the age of 13. He was always active in the Gettysburg reenactments throughout the years. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, hiking and canoeing. He was a talented singer, and participated in an Irish Folk Band in college and was the lead in many high school musicals. Jay was a family man. He loved his wife and children with all his heart. As with his love of studying history, Jay and Kelly together found a historic house from 1770 in Maine to buy for their retirement. He loved spending time at the family cabin at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. His huge and loving personality will be missed and remembered by all those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, of 17 years, Kelly (Kemp) Spiese, children, Samuel Jacob Spiese IV, Owen Robert Jacob Spiese, Kieran Allen Spiese, and Mairead Anne Madeline Spiese, grandmother, Joan M. Nolin, siblings, Sarah Gulick and Christopher Spiese and his loving extended family. Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 13 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 25 W. High Street, Gettysburg with Reverend Father Brian Olkowski officiating. A viewing will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 12 at Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg. Interment will be private at Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg. Memorial contributions may be made in Jay’s name to York Catholic High School, 601 E. Springettsbury Avenue, York, PA 17403 and the Corpus Christi Catholic School, 305 N. 2nd Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
