Stanley “Stan” Brenner, age 80, of York, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2025, at The Gardens of Gettysburg Nursing Home in Gettysburg. He was born on July 17, 1944, in York, PA, son of the late Leonard and Doris M. (Gingerich) Brenner.
Stanley graduated with the Class of 1962 from William Penn Senior High School in York. In late 1965, while working at Cole Steel, he was drafted into the Army but chose instead to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably as a corporal during the Vietnam War (1966–1967). Following his tour in Vietnam, he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba until his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in April 1968. Stanley was immensely proud of his service, an experience that deeply shaped his life and inspired him to author and self-publish a book in 2002 titled, The Vietnam War through the Eyes of a Young Marine 1966–1967: Drafted into Combat. He later published a second book in 2011, Vietnam Veterans (Why the War Never Ends), which examined the lasting effects of the Vietnam War on its veterans. Following his military service, Stanley worked as a machine operator at York International. After retiring, he continued his industrious spirit by selling old magazines, custom-made T-shirts, baseball caps, and various other items at local flea markets. He was an early adopter of online selling, using platforms like eBay in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Stanley was a proud member of the American Legion. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Penn State football, spending quality time with his wife, and caring for his beloved late dog, Maggie.
Stanley is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Alinda D. (Kirk) Brenner; former wife, Carole A. Brenner of York; his daughter, Katherine A. Brenner, and her husband, Axel V. Egilsson of Reykjavík, Iceland; and granddaughter, Ísabella. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Roberts of York; brother, Ralph Brenner of York; sister, Geraldine Miller of York; and half-brother, Alan Brenner of York. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Edward C. Roberts.
