Sylvia G. Humphrey, age 91 of Shippensburg, PA passed away November 25, 2025 at Celebration Villa of Shippensburg. She was born March 22, 1934 in Arlington, VA to the late Howard M. and Margie Ruth (Dyarman) Wingerd. Sylvia was widowed by her husband, Richard L. Humphrey.

Sylvia worked for the federal government in Washington, DC at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, where she was in public affairs, serving as editor of the center’s newspaper, “On The Surface”. She retired after 34 years in 1989. Sylvia won numerous writing awards for her work, and also received a Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Awrad and a Public Affairs Excellence Award in 1988. Her work took her aboard Navy ships, including the battleships, USS Missouri and USS Iowa, where she reported on events for her newspaper. She spent a week at sea aboard the landing craft USS Whidbey Island, learning about life aboard ship, as part of a Scientists at Sea Program. Sylvia reported on the careers of the late Admiral Hyman C. Rickover, the “father” of the Nuclear Navy and the late Admiral Grace Hopper, an illustrious computer expert.

Sylvia and her husband moved to Shippensburg in 1993. She was active in the Shippensburg Lions Club for 13 years and served as president and received the Melvin Jones Award. She was also active in the Meals on Wheels program and enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and writing.

Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Karen L. Sic-Cua (Jose) of San Leandro, CA; granddaughter, Jessica L. Davis (Christian) and son, Aiden; granddaughter, Emily A. Hinkle (Daniel) and children, Parker and Kenadie and niece, Linda E. Shafer. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alice E. Shafer and half-sister, Carol Crowder.

Professional services have been entrusted to Dugan Funeral & Cremation, Ltd., 51 Asper Drive, Shippensburg. At Sylvia’s request, there will be no viewing. A graveside memorial service will be held in early 2026. To leave a condolence for the family, please visit DuganFH.com.
