I’m really happy to share my experience of working with Allen and Kitty Dugan of Dugan Funeral Homes because I’ve never, ever been at a Funeral Home where the people cared so much. If there’s anything close to perfection in the Funeral industry, Kitty and Allen are that. The most caring, loving people ever; marvelous, very comforting; they are “tops.” Everything they do expresses their understanding of “being there for people.” I was so impressed with their level of care. From the first night they came to the house when my husband had passed—the very beginning, the very first moment—they never stopped caring. There was not a time when I felt they were focused on anything other than my needs at that moment. Everything I asked for was done absolutely perfectly. Then when we went to the cemetery, Kitty noticed I was alone. Immediately, she was right there beside me, and walked me to my car. Her care was so comforting; you wouldn’t know she was basically a stranger. Other family members were also amazed at the care we received. Never in my life had I thought about the Funeral business until I met Allen and Kitty. To be there and see someone doing that—the way they are “there” for people—it made me want to do that for others. By sharing my experience I hope to help others benefit from the marvelous care I’ve received from The Dugan’s at such a difficult time in life. And, not just during the time of the funeral, but also their follow-up afterwards. The booklets on grieving they sent have been so very helpful; and yet even more so, they have encouraged me to be in touch if I needed something personally, to talk, or anything, to simply stop by any time. And, I know they truly mean it. You can see it. It really does show in how they are with everything. I have lost other family members, but NEVER have I experienced all that caring. Both Allen and Kitty are wonderful people, actually beyond wonderful. I talk about them all the time; I would never recommend anybody else.

They were wonderful! Allen and Kitty couldn’t do anything better. They are compassionate, willing to do what they could to make us feel comfortable. Went above and beyond to help us in a very difficult time. They didn’t rush us in making decisions quickly. They stuck with us through the whole process and comforted us when we needed it. The distance from Chambersburg to Shippensburg wasn’t even a factor. It was not out of the way to travel there for Allan’s service with a viewing. Very family oriented and even sent us a card thanking us for letting them take care of my husband, Allan. At the cemetery, while sitting in the car upset, Kitty stood by the car with me the whole time to make sure I was ok until the rest of the family came back. Even months after the service they are still there for us for any questions or help we need. So pleased with Dugan’s Funeral Home that my sister and I are pre-paying for our funerals through Dugan’s also. You’re so upset at the time of a loss, on that day, you can’t think of everything you want to say. Pre-planning is better. Do it now.

The level of care I received from Allen and Kitty Dugan before, during, and after my husband’s funeral service is very hard to put into words. What they provided went beyond what I expected to receive from a Funeral Director. Caring and compassionate, they guided me through every step of the process; handling many details I could not have anticipated. Their only concern was making sure that I had everything I needed to give my husband the proper service. I didn’t know the Dugan’s, and yet, I soon came to understand the heart they have for taking care of people. I was amazed by the extra care they took in handling so many things while making it as relaxed as possible. When making decisions, they provided all the options; I didn’t feel pushed into any selections or you “have to” provide this. If I wasn’t able to make a specific decision, we would set it aside and come back to it. Always focused on me, it was never a pushy, business approach. At the initial visit, my ten-year old son and I met Allen first. Allen took great care to explain things to Dominic so he could have a say in the choices being made in planning his Dad’s service. Understanding all that was going on made it much easier for him to handle. And it was so helpful to have our private time the night before to help Dominic be prepared and as comfortable, as possible, for the service. I’m also very impressed with the extra follow-up care we’re receiving since Ken’s passing. Occasional grief pamphlets, prayers, bible verses, poems, “We’re here” card – all sent at appropriate times with personal correspondence, not a form letter. I appreciate their helpful approach with messages asking “What else do you need?” and “How can we put you in touch with those services?” Even though they offer products such as headstones and markers that support their services, Allen and Kitty never mentioned the business aspect. Our planning focused on the funeral, that’s it. When I was ready and initiated the conversation about a headstone, they were very responsive to assist me with it. They truly put the timing in the family’s hands. I’m so glad I chose Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory. You can tell they take a great amount of pride in easing the burden of such a difficult time. As hard as this is, they have made it a smooth, easy process. I cannot say enough about the care they provide.

Based on my positive experience, I write this to encourage others to preplan and prepay funeral arrangements for your loved ones and/or yourself. As a marketing assistant to Kitty Dugan, I have promoted the benefits of preplanning. I knew it made sense, but didn’t really see the actual need. However, after walking through the experience first-hand, I appreciate and understand in a much deeper way why preplanning is such a benefit. My sister and I recently assisted our parents in discussing and deciding upon their future funeral arrangements. While this topic wasn’t easy to address initially, we are all very thankful and relieved to have their choices placed securely into Allen and Kitty’s compassionate, professional hands. We now have peace of mind knowing that our parents’ wishes will be fulfilled. While discussing options and gathering needed information, it was so much easier to learn special details and find important documents while our parents were still able to assist us. And, as heart-breaking as it is to watch a close family member approach the death of a loved one, I see her peace of mind (as much as is possible at this difficult time) because they also chose to preplan. Just as we plan for other life events such as births and weddings, it also makes sense to plan ahead for the natural life experience of celebrating the life lived here on earth and passing into our eternal home. I honestly believe we will be able to focus on celebrating our parents’ lives more fully when that time comes because important funeral decisions have been made in advance, and we have a plan in place.

I have never worked with anyone like Allen and Kitty Dugan, all the times I've been through something like this. They are so understanding, just down to earth people. We didn't know if we could afford everything we wanted to do for Bob's mother's funeral. Allen made some suggestions, and we still felt that we got done what we wanted. He even took time on a Saturday to meet at the cemetery to show us samples of stones that could work with the finances we had. They're great people, not 'all business,' just wonderful to work with, and seemed more like family!
